QUITTARD (AUGUSTE), son of Francoise Quittard. He was a child of six
years of age, who was so ill of typhoid fever that he could not be
removed from Bazeilles when the place was attacked by the Prussians.
Early in the day, his mother was killed by a cannon ball, and the poor
child lay for hours tossing with fever and calling for her. He was
burned to death in his bed, as the Prussians, infuriated by the length
of the struggle, wantonly set fire to the village. La debacle.
QUITTARD (FRANCOISE), widow of a mason, and now caretaker of the
dye-works at Bazeilles, which belonged to Delaherche. Before the battle
all the workers made their escape into Belgium, but Francoise was unable
to leave on account of the illness of her little son.
